Top Five Weirdest Looking Fish

Flying Gurnard

The Flying Gurnards are known for their disproportionately large pectoral fins. In spite of their name however, they can’t actually fly. Very Beautiful yet weird looking fella!.

Northern Stargazer

Not the most cuddly looking creature in the ocean, the stargazer buries itself in the sand and lies in wait to ambush its prey.

Roughback Batfish

Also known as seabats or anglerfishes, the Ogcocephalus parvus is a species of batfish that grows to a length of 4 inches (10 cm). It has a bulbous lure or an esca which unlike that of most anglerfishes is not luminous but rather secretes fluid which acts like a chemical to attract prey.

Mola Mola

The ocean sunfish is the heaviest known bony fish in the world and has an average adult weight of 2,200 lbs (1,000 kg). A laterally flattened body, the common mola as it is also known, generally feasts on jellyfish.

Sarcastic Fringehead

Why sarcastic? We’re not sure, but one thing that can be said of this creature is that it is ferocious. Highly territorial, when two of these uglies battle it out, they wrestle by pressing their mouths together as if kissing which allows them to figure out which is the larger fish and thus the winner establishes dominance.

How To Build Non-Toxic Aquarium Décor

An aquarium is a moving work of art. The life within and the decorations can reflect different moods and feelings. You can build non-toxic aquarium decorations and change the feel of your art easy and cheap.
The important thing to remember about anything you put into your aquarium is that it must be non-toxic; it cannot be oily, dirty, or able to mix in with the water. Some great things are found in nature; rocks and driftwood make great additions to aquariums. Use non-toxic glue and make caves and such for your fish to hide in out of rocks or glass stones. Find or buy some seashells. If you have a fresh water aquarium you should wash any seashells very well and may even want to coat them with non-toxic silicon to keep any salt from mixing in your water.
You can also build non-toxic aquarium decorations out of ceramic. Make sure the paint and glaze you use is non-toxic and won't bleed into the water. There are all kinds of different molds available that would look great in an aquarium.
Try to keep the habits of your fish in mind when you build non-toxic aquarium decorations. Make your decorations work with the colors of your fish. Try not to overcrowd the tank; the fish still need room to swim around. It may be best to start with the backdrop, in the theme you are working with, and add one piece at time until you are happy with the result.
When you first get started you may want to decide on a few different themes. Build non-toxic aquarium decorations around the themes. Perhaps a few natural pieces to create the underwater atmosphere, and then finish it off with some ceramic pieces you did yourself. You could make things have an old look, perhaps even break some pieces before you have them fired, to give the feel of things being lost in the sea for a long period of time.
If you can draw or have some great photos you can make to the size of the back of the tank, you can build non-toxic aquarium decorations to create an epic landscape. Get the measurements of the back of your tank and resize the picture or drawing to fit. Once you have the right size you will need to get the picture laminated so it can go in the water. You would be surprised how having some type of landscape on the back of the aquarium will really bring it all together.
Thanks for reading guys and I hope I helped in some way, check out my other blogs if you have the time!

How To Breed Jack Dempsey Cichlids

Breeding Jack Demspey's can be tricky when the fish are still young. As they grow, males will begin to show more spangles, particularly on their face, than females, but due to the amount of inbreeding this method is not as reliable as it once was. If you are planning on breeding Dempsey's, then the best option is to purchase several juveniles and raise them together. That should ensure that you will get one bonded pair out of the group and the other fish can be returned to the pet shop.
Eggs are laid on a flat, smooth rock that has been cleaned by the parents, and both fish will take turns in guarding and protecting the eggs. The fry will hatch in between 3 to 5 days, and both parents will continue to guard and protect the flock. Your adults will be at their most aggressive at this point and it is highly recommended to remove tankmates to a safer environment when you see your Dempsey's preparing to spawn. It is also recommended not to bother your fish if it can be avoided, as they will attack anyone or anything that entered their territory.

As long as you follow the steps my friends I am very sure you will be successful in your journey to breeding these beauty's. Thank you for your time guys and I hope you return to my blog as I will be posting everyday.

A Quick And Easy Guide To Setting Up Your Home Aquarium

Hello and welcome, I'm here to give you a few tips on setting up a successful aquarium at home. I myself have had many aquariums set up at home for many years and I think there great. Although it is quite tricky to get it right the first time, many of my friends and family also found it very demanding. But hey trust me when its all set up you can give yourself a nice pat on the back!, because seriously it makes a huge difference to the home and to yourself in general.

First things first when setting up you need to remember the following :

Setting Up Aquarium
  • Keep the tank away from loud noises such as TVs, Radios and so forth, Fish don't like loud noises and constant exposure to noise will stress them out and eventually influence their well being negatively.

  • Try to set up the tank away from heat sources that could potentially raise to temperature such as radiators and fires, this could raise the temperature of the tank water and make the fish ill, which we don't want.

  • Strong light can have a large influence on algae in the aquarium, so try to avoid placing it near strong natural light sources such as windows/skylights. A little natural sunlight is perfect; too much will cause you problems with your water quality in a short space of time which in turn will have a negative effect on your fish's well being.

  • Make sure the ground your placing your aquarium on is completely level, also be sure that the stand or cabinet your planning to place your tank onto is very stable and can hold.

Cleaning And Filling Aquarium

Once you have done all you need and feel your aquarium is up to your standards, you are ready to clean and fill that beauty up. Be sure to clean your tank up before adding your water, use a clean cloth, a bucket and lukewarm water. Check your cloth is absolutely clean because you can risk getting any unwanted chemicals into your tank. After completing this you are ready to add your gravel or sand, but wash it through many times before hand to ensure it is clean as a whistle. Just chuck it in your bucket and rinse through whilst stirring with your hand. Repeat this process till its all clean then empty any excess water out of your bucket.
When it comes to décor make sure its store brought and not out of the garden as it is harmful to the fish, but I'm sure your aware of that.

Adding The Electrical Equipment

What you will need :

  • A heater,  The heater will maintain a consistent temperature within the aquarium. The ideal temperature for basic community tank 21-28 °C. Ask your retailer what temperature is right for your fish.

  • A filter, there are many to choose from and they all do the job. This is essential for really every aquarium to maintain clear and healthy water.

  • A thermometer. This will allow you to keep an eye on the water temperature at all times. Your local aquarium retailer will offer a variety a different thermometers from LED, glass and digital.

  • An airstone, air-pump and check valve. This provides the necessary oxygen for both fish and plants, helps with the filtration process by aerating the water and adding decorative touch with bubbles to your aquarium.

  • Lighting. An aquarium light should be switched on for 8-10 hours a day, this is essential for natural plant growth and makes fish’s colours stand out.

Once all the décor and equipment have been added to your aquarium, it can now be filled with water. This is best done by placing a bowl/saucer on the bottom and slowly adding room temperature tap water using a jug. Once the aquarium is filled up completely, make sure your hands are dry and switch on the electrical equipment.Once your aquarium has been filled with water and switched on, you now need to add some water treatment. The water treatment adds the necessary bacteria for the aquarium’s biological balance. It is essential that these bacteria are introduced to your aquarium. They will help to establish a natural balance and maintain a good water quality. Water conditioner is available from all specialist aquatic retailers. Over the next few weeks check temperature and ensure that there is a good water circulation around the aquarium by adjusting the flow direction of moving air-stones.
Once the bacterial starter treatment has been added add a few flakes of food. This will help the filter to develop until your fish arrive. I strongly recommend that the aquarium is left to run for the bacteria to establish for 2-3 weeks before adding the first small introduction of fish.

And that it guys, I hope this guide helped you and that your happy with the set up. Any feedback would be great.
